Our History
St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church is the first African-American church established during the antebellum period.
The original congregation of St. John’s was a small group of ex-slaves chartered in 1836. The group continued to grow, and service members moved to 2261 E.40th Street in 1908. As racial tensions continued to increase after World War I, membership grew to over 3,000 after World War II. Previous speakers hosted at St. John AME include Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, and Marian Anderson for her first concert in Cleveland in 1919. St. John AME was recognized as a Cleveland Historic Landmark in 1974 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
